Sandwich composites for lighter and safer vehicle chassis

This prototype of the chassis for a concept vehicle built out of sandwich composite materials features a top layer of aluminium with cellular polyurethane. Both materials are comparatively inexpensive and easily available. The sandwich composite construction is designed to crumple in a front-end collision in a way that transforms the energy. The rigidity of the vehicle’s front section has already been proven in crash tests at the DLR institute. More Information
